Government Support
Preserving and protecting the rare and remarkable flora and fauna of the Galapagos has long been an international effort. And while the government of Ecuador has been instrumental in ensuring the success of conservation efforts, political and economic volatility in recent years has contributed to lapses in financial support, enforcement of laws and regulations, and proper planning.

Special Law for the Galapagos
The Special Law for the Galapagos is a landmark piece of legislation providing a legal framework that fosters conservation and sustainable development activities in the Galapagos. A joint effort between the government and concerned organizations, the Law protects biodiversity and fosters a culture of conservation, engaging Galapagos residents as advocates for conservation.

While it is a significant step toward continued conservation and sustainable development efforts now and in the future, the Special Law for the Galapagos remains difficult to implement and enforce.
