Insects

While the Galapagos Islands are home to many rare animal species, the diversity of insects present throughout much of the tropics is surprising absent here.

Of the millions of insect species that make their home in the tropics, only slightly more than 1,000 are found in the Galapagos. The habitat is ideal, but thriving here was never the issue. Getting here was.

Like many other Galapagos animals, colonizing the islands posed a great challenge. And as a result, the Galapagos is home to only one species of bee, one preying mantis and two scorpions. Some of the more common insects include the painted locust, sulphur butterfly, green hawkmoth and several species of beetles.
