Native Galapagos flora is rich in diversity. Take the Galapagos daisy tree. Unique to the islands, it has evolved as the plant equivalent of Darwin’s finches, constantly responding to shifts in its environment and reinventing itself more often than an American pop star.
In all, there are more than 550 species of native Galapagos flora on the islands. Like the daisy tree, roughly a third are found no where else on earth. Many arrived like early explorers—by crossing the ocean. Called “pioneer plants,” these hardy species mixed and mingled with the islands’ animals, forming complex ecosystems. Opuntia, the Galapagos prickly pear cactus, is one native plant that has benefited from such a relationship. Taking advantage of its appeal to the Galapagos giant tortoise and land iguana, the Opuntia has managed to spread its influence throughout the islands.
