Threats

No other place on the planet offers the rich diversity of plant life found in the Galapagos Islands, but threats—both human and natural—have upset the delicate balance of life on the islands much to the detriment of Galapagos plants.

Population growth and a rise in introduced Galapagos plants and animals, as well as insects and severe weather are a few of the more significant threats to Galapagos plants.

Eliminating or controlling threats to Galapagos plants is a significant task, but conservation efforts supported by sustainable tourism are helping to reduce threats to the Galapagos’ fragile ecosystems and preserve native plant species.

To protect Galapagos plants, Ecuador has restricted immigration and given the Galapagos National Park Service more control. A quarantine program has reduced the influx of introduced Galapagos plants, and surveys are helping to identify and protect threatened native plant species and ecosystems.
