San Cristobal

San Cristóbal is geologically one of the oldest islands, indicated by its eroded volcanic peaks in the north and densely vegetated slopes in the south. The town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the capital of Galápagos Province. A bus ride through highland farms brings you to El Junco, the only freshwater lake in Galápagos. The western side of the island is home to the spectacular Kicker Rock, also known as Leon Dormido (Sleeping Lion), the jagged remains of an old tuff cone whose flanks are covered with seabirds.

Just south of the capital, La Lobería beach harbors a large sea lion colony, living amongst a striking variety of colorful vegetation. Dozens of adults and pups play in the tide pools, alongside the one of the largest colonies of marine iguanas in the archipelago.

Punta Pitt, located at the north end of San Cristóbal, comprises a set of eroded volcanic cones sparsely populated by endemic vegetation. This locale provides protection for such species as sea lions, lava lizards, marine iguanas, frigate birds, pelicans and blue-footed boobies. It also boasts a beautiful olive-yellow beach accessible to swimmers.
